Bonnyville Duo Selected for WJAC Camp

The Bonnyville Pontiacs are excited to announce that two players have been selected to attend Team Canada West’s camp upcoming later this month in Cornwall.

Forward Matteo Giampa and netminder Bodee Weiss are part of 31 invitees to camp that will take place from Dec. 5th-7th at the Cornwall Civic Complex for three days of practices and games. “We are thrilled to see Matteo and Bodee get the invitation to Team Canada West camp,” said associate General Manager Neil Langridge. “They have earned this invitation through their work ethic and commitment to success this season.”

There will be two intrasquad games between East and West before the final rosters are named on Dec. 7. The 2022 World Junior A Challenge is set for Dec. 11-18 at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

Giampa is currently third in AJHL scoring with 15 goals and 33 assists in 29 games this season. That includes being the league’s leading 5-on-5 scorer.

Meanwhile, Weiss has posted solid numbers this season as the Yaks starter. He is second in the league in wins with 12 and has a 3.33 goals against average and .900 save percentage in 20 appearances this season.

“Both Matteo and Bodee have been huge contributors to our hockey team this season,” said associate General Manager Chad Nelson. “In stepping into larger roles in their second seasons in the AJHL, they have proven not only do they belong, but deserve recognition at the national level with their invitations to Team Canada West camp.”

The team is loaded with AJHL talent, as 26 of the 31 selections to camp are from Alberta Junior Hockey League clubs. The World Junior A Challenge will be comprised of Team Canada West, Team Canada East, United States, Sweden, and Latvia.

The Bonnyville Pontiacs wish them the best of luck at camp and will be cheering their success from afar as they compete in Cornwall.
