Pontiacs affiliate goalie Renna Trembecky made history this past week as she suited up for her first AJHL regular season game. Trembecky is now the third female goalie to play an AJHL game in the leagues 61 year history.
Renna Trembecky came in during the 3rd period of Bonnyville’s game at the Whitecourt Wolverines on Tuesday, Feb. 26. She made 11 stops, including a tremendous breakaway save on Joey Vetrano.
Trembecky joins a very elite group of female goaltenders to play in the AJHL. Two of the three female goaltenders who have played a regular season game in the AJHL have now played for the Pontiacs organization.
The most recent female goaltender to play a game in the AJHL was Emerance Maschmeyer who played seven games for the Lloydminster Bobcats from 2011-2012 before heading off to win Gold at the Olympics in the 2021-22 season.
The only other female goaltender to play a regular season game in the AJHL until now, was non other than the Pontiacs very own Shannon Szabados. Szabados also netted her own Olympic Gold medals with team Canada but in 2010 and 2014 respectively.
More than a one hit wonder, Szabados played 162 games in her AJHL career, 41 of which were with the Bonnyville Pontiacs. She played for the Pontiacs in the 2005-2006 season where Szabados played an outstanding 41 of 60 games that year. She finished the regular season going 26-12-1 with a .902 save percentage and 3.08 goals against average.
The 17 year old Trembecky currently plays for the Sherwood Park U18 AAA KingsĀ and is 11-3-2 with a 2.31 GAA and .922 save percentage in 17 games played.
The 5’4″ Strathcona born goalie Trembecky is committed to Northeastern University (NCAA Div 1).
